Director, Rupert Goold, asked that the titles reflected the glamour associated with Judy Garland’s past stardom, without appearing gaudy or sensational, and sympathetic to where we find Garland in her later career.

It was also felt we should reference ‘The Wizard Of Oz’, given it catapulted Garland to stardom at such an early age. Of course, one of the most enduring images from that film, are Dorothy’s red sequin shoes, so we settled on a strong minimal concept, using the red sequins to form the letters of her name.

The title starts with the glittering red letters filling the screen, embodying the enormity of her legendary status. But as her name slowly tracks back, so the sparking light fades, finally dissolving into the following scene, where we find the older Judy preparing to appear on stage with her children, to make ends meet.

The sparkling sequins also became the motif adopted for other titling and credits in the film, using colours that reflect the scenes they feature within.

The titles were built using filmed elements, combined with various effects and animation in Adobe After Effects.
